The Gleaners
The Gleaners (Laetitia Sonami & Matt Robidoux)
“3” (2026)
Wigs, small analog modules, computer, sensors, shoes and other objects
The Gleaners, composed of Laetitia Sonami and Matt Robidoux, was recently formed through a shared attraction to the Theatre of the Absurd. Gestures, objects and sounds create inscrutable tasks and behaviors as each performer navigates the space seemingly unaware of the other’s presence. Each performance explores new relationships to space and bodies. This is their third performance.
While Alfred Jarry can be traced as an early source with his Pataphysics (the science of imaginary solutions), the Theatre of the Absurd grew post World War II and echoed a world of broken communication.
Laetitia Sonami
Sonami’s work bridges the technological, the mechanical and the uncanny, exploring the fragile terrain where body, memory, language, and machine intersect. Since the late 1980s, Sonami has demonstrated a deep engagement with gesture-based performance, real-time sound synthesis, interactive systems, and embodied interfaces. Her practice articulates a critical approach to technology—eschewing dominant paradigms of control and mastery in favor of embodied knowledge, contingency and unpredictability. Aside from her duo with Matt Robidoux, Sonami performs solo and in a duo with James Fei (Sparrows and Ortolans). In 2025 Sonami received the ZKM Giga-Herz Lifetime Achievement award. Black Truffle recently released an LP of two recent works and Lovely Music just released a double CD of earlier works.
